In the sanctuary of his room, Sneeth rocked back and forth on his haunches, his wings covering his head and shoulders. Shame blazed through him: he had frozen with fear when he learned Vera associated with people who had access to sticky fire. His mind raced to recall the fragments of legend about this weapon. Draqshet had taken pains to nurture his fear of infernos, but sticky-fire elevated the threat to a different dimension.

The tears streamed uncontrolled down his hollow cheeks. Hunched in the damp shadows, he’d heard Vera defend him and refuse the weapon. The lumps choking him sat heavy and rough in his chest. No matter how much he spluttered and hacked, he couldn’t cough them up. He leaned back against the wall, willing the nausea and dizziness to pass. Such weakness was unacceptable.

Using his wings for balance, he fought to his feet and stood swaying in the cool night air. The pain in his chest grew, expanding like a carcass rotting in the sun, restricting his breathing. He clasped his hands behind his skull and concentrated on breathing evenly.

Flames roared inside his head and his thoughts flittered above the bonfire like floating ash. The crackling conflagration crowded out rational thought. Protect Jenny. The potential threat to his mother was the only idea he could firmly grasp. Sneeth staggered along the corridors and up the stairs, clinging to the walls for support. The Dolls standing guard at strategic points, had no orders pertaining to him, therefore, they ignored him.

His skin puckered in the frigid air, the stone flags on the floor adding naught to his comfort, as he collapsed in a shivering heap outside Jenny’s door. Sneeth pressed his ear to the wood and listened. He gasped and half rose, when a log popped on her fire before realising what he’d heard. He closed his eyes, pushing away the usual night sounds of the Palace groaning as the ancient stones and beams cooled and settled.

Jenny shifted in her sleep, the rustle of bed linens clearly audible to Sneeth. Her breathing was slow and regular, and Sneeth exhaled in relief. Wrapping his wings around himself as protection from the cold, he stretched himself before her door and waited for dawn.
